Ford Escort Boot Lock

Hi all

Another small problem with my 1998 R-reg Ford Escort.

It's a hatchback and over the last few weeks, the boot has been harder and harder to open with the key. It now won't open on the key at all. The key goes all the way into the lock barrel but it won't turn to open the boot.

What is the likely cause of this? The boot still opens fine if you press the release in the car itself so I am guessing that maybe the lock barrel is broken. Is it possible to change this? I'm going to take the plastic panel off the back door at the weekend to have a look but would appreciate any guideance.

On a related note, I have been loathe to use too much force when turning the key because I only have one of them and it isn't the red master. I bought the car second hand for a small amount of money last April. Is there any way to get a master key for the current ignition system from Ford or elsewhere? Don't want to have to change all the locks etc.

Thanks in advance

Try spraying WD40 (don't be mean with it!) into the lock and move the key in and out to work the oil into the lock plungers. Sometimes, gunk from the road can gum up the lock, especially in winter, making a plunger stick, thus stopping the lock from turning.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I already tried the WD40 approach with no effect, though.

This will work temporarily, but an actual solvent meant for a lock will prove more succesful in the long-term. The OP problem is a common one mind you, spray lock-solvent into it, turn the key a few times whilst the boot is open, and repeat as necessary until it feels 'normal' again.

This is a "normal" fault on Escorts. I think the lock is f**cked.
