Brake pipe fittings on Japanese cars?

Hi there



I need to fabricate a few new brake pipes on a 1993 Mitsubishi - does anybody know the correct size for the male fittings that go on the ends of the pipes? I'm miles from a factors so once I take the old pipes off i will be grounded until the new ones are on and if I buy the wrong size it is a long walk.

Why not just reuse the old fittings?

Cos the chances are they'll be FUBAR getting them off. In any case, they distort in use so reusing the old ones isn't a good idea.

My local shop only keeps two, metric & imperial, so there's no issue with which size to get. For the Mitsubishi (and I have done Mitsi brake pipes in the past), just standard metric. They have fitted evey car I've needed to use them on.

I've trashed my share in getting them off, but I've never seen one distort in use.

To get them off without damaging them, just cut off the pipe right next to the union, and put a hex socket over it. You can then drive the small piece out of the union with a small punch. Then don't forget to add the odd half inch that you've cut off to the length of the pipe you're making.

Oh, and they could well be M10x 1mm, but check first.

Look carefully at the end where the flare is. Compare it with a new one. They do distort outwards, and it's by design.

I had a BX some years back, but never needed to do any plumbing on it!

Distortion by design, or by overtightening? IMHO it's the latter.

All the hydraulic unions - including the brakes - are a completely different fitting, with a seal. Not just hydraulic suspension cars, either

- mid-60s-on 2cvs use the same style on the brakes. There's several different sizes of union, and different seals according to the fluid.

If that's the case, they're overtightened in the factory. But they are made from soft metal, and it's my feeling that they are intended to spread a little to aid the seal. Of course, I could be completely wrong!
