Cam belt change on VW Golf - How much approx?

My mechanic told me at the last service that I would need to change the Cam belt on my 97 golf (78,000 miles) before Xmas and said it would cost around =A3300.

Does this seem reasonable/Exorbitant? He will also be doing the annual service & MOT which will be extra.

Which engine?

Sounds alittle on the high side, does it include water pump / tensioner etc???

Depends on the engine.

I had my 1998 Pug 306 cambelt changed by a Pug main dealer for around £75 + VAT I think. Compared to the price quoted on here - it seems a very good price, and I had to re-check the paperwork to confirm that it actually said cam-belt, and not any other belt!

Sorry, I should have said its a 1.4L (1390). Not sure if it includes water pump / tensioner, are they normally included?

Repair time is 1.1hrs. Cam belt abut £20-£30.

£300 is expensive.

Its dear then, the 1.4 is dead easy to do, and takes around an hour.

Even the one on my Alfa, which is booked at 4 hours including tensioner and variator only took my tame mechanic 1.5 hours to do.
