I was wondering if there are places where you can hire a small 1 car transporter van? Would be handy for picking up a purchase fat away.

it is possible to hire car trailers but recovery vehicles are much more difficult, phone around.
There are places that hire out recovery vehicles, but by the time you pay the rental, and get it covered on insurance, you would probably be cheaper paying to have it moved.
Where is it coming from & to?
hire a trailer and borrow a bigger car to tow it ?
i used to use my citroen BX 1.9 desiel to tow a trailer with a classic on it.
