Cavalier SRi Help

Neighbour's Cavalier blew his 2.0 20NE engine last week, and he sorted a

20SEH (130bhp SRi engine).

With everything plugged in the way it should (plugged in and screwed in) it turns and turns, splutters, but never starts, never mind run.

With the nut unscrewed out the top of the fuel pressure regulator, the engine seems more keen to start, but still dies.

With both the nut unscrewed and the VAF unplugged, the engine will start (just) and will run, but VERY lumpy, and moving it is near impossible without the engine stalling (basically pressing the throttle).

The VAF has been replaced to no avail. I personally think it's an air leak somewhere (all pipes and connectors checked and double checked, though) maybe caused by a leaky inlet manifold gasket.

Any other ideas? Is this a common fault? For the record, there is a small pipe that carries coolant from just above one of the block to radiator that supposedly runs to the throttle body (the pipe on this engine is missing, but the holes have been blocked off). Does anyone know it's purpose? Someone has suggested a cold start valve.

Any ideas, stabs or guesses welcome.
