Is it possible to disable the warning beeper for reverse gear in my new Celica? I'm sure the demo car didn't do it ... or maybe I never went backwards. It serves no useful purpose other than to annoy, especially as I have a long drive to reverse down to my garage.
I guess removing the switch is not an option, as I need to keep the reversing light?
My mate's Mk3 MR2 did that. Comedy it was! He never got around to working out how to disable it.

Is there a switch on the dash with a glyph like a horn with a X through it? Trucks have a switch to turn the bleeper off so you don't piss off the neighbours at night.

Nope - nothing like that. And the beep is buried deep behind the dash. It's a new car so I don't want to damage anything - just shut it up.
Try getting on to the dealer. If it's anything like my Saab, there'll either be some "back door" method of turning things like that on and off, or the dealer will be able to re-configure it by plugging in their diagnostic tool.
Directly knobbling the bleeper itself probably wouldn't be ideal anyway - I bet it's used for loads of other warnings besides the reversing one.

Thanks Colin - that's much as I'd thought. Trouble is, I bought it through Drive the Deal on the Internet, to save about £1900. It's too far to take it back to the supplier, and my local dealer won't be too sympathetic!
How sympathetic or otherwise is relevant to a point, but ultimately you'll be taking it there for a service, right - if not, imply that you will be! ;)
Dealers make far more coin off the servicing than anything else.
Personally, I'd put up with it until the first service, then have them do it whilst they're doing the service.
you should be able to turn it off through the computer. The dealer will be able to do this.
You reckon they would be sympathetic if you'ld bought the car from them ?
Nice thought, but not twice, nor even 10 times will shut the bugger up.
Is the noise just inside or can it be heard outside also?
I had an imported jeep that used to bleep every time I went into reverse but it was just an audible noise to remind me the car was in reverse (automatic). The garage just located the speaker/buzzer and disconnected it for me.
It seems to be inside only - it comes from behind the steering wheel, somewhere under the dash.
