Citroen Diesel Engine.

Sods law, after recently posting regarding keeping car in good nick mechanically wise, something crops up. Diesel Citroen Xsara, 1.9 Non Turbo, DX Engine, 55'000 ,miles, oil / filter changed 280 miles ago '98 (R Reg). When starting, engine is fine but you hear what I can only describe as a 'metallic' sound. Not dissimilar I would say to two spoons being 'knocked' together. Missus says sounds like 'birds chirping'. It will happen about 4 times a minute, no sequence etc and never stops. Happens even when hot. (Engine had two hour drive and still was same). Everything else appers to be ok, but it is definatly a new problem. It is usually only noticeable when idle, but I'm sure I heard it a few times on the motorway yesterday. (65-70mph). Checked oil levels etc and they don't move (never have!). Please help, I'm somewhat anxious as, as previously posted really can't afford huge repair bills.

Many Thanks

May just be a loose belt or a worn tensioner. If it's inside the cab and not the engine bay it may be the blower fan motor.

Or possibly a minor case of big-end float in the engine. At this mileage this should be a really good and economical car!

If not it may be something as simple as a cover not replaced properly when the filter was changed

My Volvo diesel is a b*****r for doing this when the engine top cover (by this I mean the cosmetic sound deadening cover over the engine not the rocker cover) has been removed the change the oil filter.

Hi, thanks for all contributions so far, as always, gratefully receieved. I did change the oil myself and and went from 0-40 to (I think) 10-40 I actually used what the manufacturer specifies. It's also good quality (Castrol Maganatec GTD), so not sure if its that. As I always change the oil every 2-3k, I'm not conviniced I have done anything wrong or different from usual. A friend suggested some snake oil from Halfrauds. (Wynns hydraulic something or nother), doesnt seem to have made a difference, I also use Redex every couple of tanks with no known problems. I had the cam belt / water pump changed a few thousand miles ago, with no problems, however, I think the 'chinking sound', appears to be eminating from around the (as you look at the engine) left hand side near to one of the belts that you can see running. I'm not too hot with cars and would rather get into debt putting it right than knackering it myself. All covers etc, seem to be secure

Again many thanks for reading and to those who reply!

That sounds a lot like the noise my Rover used to make. You knew which car was coming up the drive just from that noise! Similar engine. It was caused by worn-out drive belts; I changed the PAS belt, the vacuum pump belt, but I think it was the alternator belt that was responsible. On the Rover it's difficult to see, but when I did manage to get access it was well past it.

Worth a try, they're not expensive, and easier to fit than you expect.

Does it change with engine speed or is it 4 times a min any engine rev range?

Exhaust heat shields can make some odd and horrendous sounds.
