Clutch Problem - 1989 Escort

I had a new clutch fitted on my 1989 Escort in the last few days. The previous clutch had clearly worn and was slipping considerably. However, the new clutch is causing problems. When engaging 1st gear the biting point is miniscule and difficult to control, and regardless of the level of revs, high or low, the take-up is very sharp and tries to jump the car forward. Also, again regardless of the revs, the car judders and shudders violently upon the engagement of 1st gear. It feels as if the car is shaking to pieces. When moving into 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear the sharpness of the engagement and the judder/shudder is still there but less apparent. Once moving the car is fine with no unusual noises, although the pull of the car is not as good as I would have expected. I have been driving cars for over 20 years although I have never driven a car with a new clutch. All my previous cars and clutches have been smooth to engage gear, with a reasonable amount of biting point plus no judder whatsoever. Are these symptoms normal? Or do I have a problem? Any help, advice or suggestions will be greatly received.

If you've paid for someone to do it, take it back.

This is definitely not normal. Cars should not behave like this and I should return it to those who did the work and get them to put it right.

I think you have a problem. I have an '89 Escort which had a new clutch last year. I stalled it twice :-) driving back from the garage (the old clutch had been going for ages, and was reaaaaaally slippy), but after that all was smooth.

I'd say you got problems. Having a clutch "fitted" could mean just that - ie. the clutch plate - especially if its not a main dealer job. Having a clutch "assembly" replaced would involve the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing - a more expensive cost, but well worth it considering the amount of labour involved to just "get at" the clutch in the first place.

If just the clutch plate (the friction plate) has been replaced, then it is more likely to snatch, especially as the pressure plate "fingers" (which the release bearing contacts) and anti-snatch springs could be (probably are) weak(er) or broken.

If it was a main dealer job then take it back and demand satisfaction. If it was "Joe's Workshop Challenge" then your redress is somewhat compromised. Reputable "Joe's" however would be willing to investigate - but could charge for the prvilege - especially if you asked them to "change the clutch", which doesn't in itself state the amount of work you want them to undertake.

Sorry if I seem to be a bit pedantic - I'm only trying to help. A main dealer will (or should) change the lot (and charge), a lesser mechanic is more likely to change what's requested (and charge less). Less cost is not necessarily the best price.
