I'm about to replace a corroded evaporator in my car but a friend told me that connecting AC pipes is a specialist job that requires specialized equipment. To me it looks like a case of putting new washers and then tightening the pipes to the new evaporator unit. After that I will get the system vacuumed and regassed at one of those AC service centres. Is he right, or can I just go ahead and do the job?

DIY. Only the emptying and recharging is specialist.
If you have already lost the gas, then you may as well change it yourself, if not then get it done professionally. The problems will be that the system will have damp air in it, so don't leave it too long. Tell the regasser what you have done.
