The bolt I used was exactly the same length, bolt head and thread type. Only difference was that the original only had half of the length threaded - the other half (closest to the bolt head) was just solid, and this was the bit that engaged in the groove in the ball joint pin. But I torqued the replacement bolt up properly and there's absolutely bugger all vertical movement of the balljoint (tested with a scaffold pole!) so I can't see a major problem there. Suppose in the long term it could slightly squash the thread and leave to movement which would slightly affect handling/tyre wear, but I reckon it should be ok for a few days until I get the replacement bolt (it'll only take 5 minutes to change so I may as well change it for the correct one).

Kitchen roll did the trick for me. Lots of it. Then a good wipe clean of all the nooks and crannies (not that there are many) with a rag. Looked lovely and shiny. Then I opened the satchet of grease and made it unshiny again.

Good idea. Proper bolts are considerably stronger than setscrews. Setscrews having the nasty habit of shearing long before a bolt would.
