De-pinning tool for VW

I am told that I would need a de-pinning tool to fit the towbar dedicated electrics to VW Passat. What does such a tool look like?

What does your connector look like? In electronics, I've had connectors apart just using the very thin end of a pair of tweezers to hold back the latch.

I usually just jam the smallest jewellers screw driver in.

Many connectors have a sort of barb or two which allows a terminal to be inserted to the connector body easily, but not removed. To remove that terminal, you need a way of pushing that barb(s) back. Sadly, there are many different designs of connector, so no one tool will do them all.

But you may be able to improvise something using small screwdrivers etc. The special tool for that job may be very difficult to find and very expensive.

I have two such tools here - bought from Vehicle Wiring Products some time ago. Each as 6 different blades. And I've yet to find a connector either works on. ;-)

I don't have the car yet. I am told that I would need one if I wish to install the electrics for a tow bar.

There's a good selection of pin extraction tools here:

I don't think one size fits all here.
