Diesel - Poor Starting. NOT the heater Plugs

if it was gummed up injectors then its likely to run like a bag of s*it

Well, it idles roughly and felt weak compared to my last TD ZX. Feels a lot better after a good thrashing, but the idling is still a bit rough and it's a pig to start when hot.

Air leak in the fuel system? Does it start easier if you use the priming pump?

I read a story (probably on here) about XUD (and others) valve clearances causing poor starting. Might be worth investigating?

Glow plugs hardly affect hot starting. Dunno about injectors, I'd expect lots of unburned fuel smoke and/or poor performance from problems with them.

Change the fuel filter and clean al cr*p out of bottom of filter housing make sure filter has seal intact. It's most unlikely that this engine has ever had the valve clearances checked tight clearances can be a cause of poor hot starting. There can also be a problem with the starting aids - glow plug - control box check by waiting 5-10 secs after light goes out before attempting to start.

How did you sparky friend check the starting aids?

Check the valve clearances- sounds very much like they're too tight, and holding valves open when hot- would certainly cause poor hot statering, and a poor hot idle.
