Diode in heater fan controller?

I haven't.

I did see summat on the telly a while back where they were talking to several people who had fallen foul of the system though.

One was a lady who had lost control of her car into a ditch and the assessor noticed they were not the std wheels for that model (although the std size) and that she hadn't notified them of this 'modification'. Unfortunately the wheels had been like that since she bought it (second hand) from the dealer and were an an 'upgrade' option.

Another was a guy who had his car stolen and when talking to the assessor / loss adjuster answered the " and have you had any issues before this " with "well, they did try to steal the radio once and must have been disturbed so I just got the window replaced and another time when they did actually get the radio ..". Because he hadn't notified them of these events (or was stupid enough to tell them at this time) they invalidated his insurance for being 'under insured' (they would have put his premiums up had he notified them of the other losses etc).

When I fitted a tow bar to the motorbike I got confirmation IN WRITING that the insurance Co were both aware and happy with said modification. I also mention tow bars when re-insuring the cars, if they ask or if there is a box on the eform.

Dave Plowman (News) was thinking very hard :

Or melt - the way around that problem is to either heatsink the wires or wrap some wet tissue around it to divert the heat from the body.

Molegrips work quite well if you've got a religious objection to just crimping it.

but they would rattle in the air duct :)

That's what the gaffer tapes for....

A small crock clip with some thick copper wire soldered into the jaws and filed flat is wot I uses. ;-)

As just about every bit of a BMW is an option (even the fog lights), I bet very few of them are properly insured.

Should I list my sunroof? The spec for the model (on log book) says "sunroof" but the model code on the VIN plate says it was made without a sunroof. It's not like the factory fit ones but is a genuine makers accessory sunroof so was fitted by the importer to bring the car up to "spec".

I've not listed my leather seats either, AFAIK they are the standard seats as supplied in the car by importer when new. For 2nd series the maker changed from a high back seat with intregal race style headrest to a low back with regular adjustable headrest. I've got early high back series 0 or 1 seats with black leather in a 2nd series car. No one has seen leather in any other car of the same type until 3 years later yet the spec says "leather". Under the leather is fabric so they were recovered. One seat is brown and the other blue, it's unlikely an upolsterer could have 2 interiors from same type of fairly low volume ~2000/year car at same time, so a batch must have been done and all mixed up. The story goes that the importer showed the car to his wife, she said it was a nice car but she didn't like the fabric seats. So they were recovered but it could be as few as 20 cars that got this treatment - the press test fleet and dealer show cars.

You never know what the InsCos will do these days.

I did on my old Sierra (that was my Co car from new).

The reason it might be good (in the long run) to mention things like that is because they, and fancy wheels / stereo may increase the risk and hence the premium. Something happens related to that item (especially) and they walk away from the who thing. I'm not offering any citations (other than those I saw on TV) nor suggest it is likely to be an issue, especially (hopefully) when the issue is nothing to do with those unlisted items (like someone forces the lock and steals the radio and you didn't mention you fitted a tow bar).

Hmm, I guess that your care could be considered a higher risk

*because* of the rarity value of the seats (etc).

Like it or not the InsCos set up a contract with us and part of that normally declares that we tell them about everything so they can manage their risk more accurately. We don't generally tell them everything because 1) we forget we should or 2) we think it might put our premium up. ;-(

I re-insured daughters Ka on-line a while back and when it came to re Tax it the computer said no. Long story short my dyslexia had helped me transpose the reg and hence why the computer could se no reference to it. *Luckily* it hadn't been driven during the period (snow / dying battery) and the InsCo didn't charge us anything to fix our problem (even though we were outside the 'check the docs within X days and we will sort it free' period).

I wonder how the Police would have taken it had we been pinged by an APNR camera. Technically there was no insurance against that registration and we weren't in possession of a vehicle with that registration yet we had cover for the make, model, year and colour of vehicle that was? ;-)

You can see it now like on those Police Stop TV shows.

"So Sir you say you applied for insurance online yet we have no record of such and you can't remember who you did it through ... " [1] :-(

[1] We have several cars and bikes.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Jacobian saying something like:

LOL! Keep up the studying.
