DMM functions + usage with EFi & ABS

During the course of sorting my S70, Tim suggested the use of a rpm meter function to monitor the output from the CAS and primary coil circuit. Since then I have been considering purchasing a modestly priced automotive meter with such a function.



However, since I started my new job I now have a Fluke 179 in my possession. As well as a fairly good count rate, this model boasts a frequency measurement mode via voltage or current, AC or DC. Although it would not calculate a rpm reading for me, is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to use it to monitor the status of various oscillating outputs like the CAS, coil primary and the ABS wheel sensors, purely as a consistency check?



The reason I ask now is because my father has an intermittent issue with the ABS activating when not wanted (i.e. under light braking) and I would like to try to get to the bottom of it. As there is no MIL lit and no mechanical problem with the brakes, my intention is to start by monitoring individual wheel sensor signals. I was planning to look at AC voltage on the individual sensors but I believe a frequency measurement would be more suitable if I am able to use it.

with regards the ABS activating when not required, what vehicle is it ? the reason i ask is we had a rover in with the same problem, it turned out that both front phono wheels (toothed abs rings) had slight cracks in them which made the ring open slightly under driving power.might worth a check if they have the rings.

Thanks for that tip reg. I'll be renewing the front discs & pads when I come to looking at it so I'll be sure to inspect the rings carefully at that time. I did the rears a short while ago, not before the problem started, and they appeared to be fine.

It seems natural to suspect a ring because one would think that a bad sensor would eventually trigger the fault lamp due to an out of range reading. The light has never come on whilst driving.

20ma current, 0-10V or a resistive range. And occasionaly I work on equipment that includes diode based components like thyristors.

My plan is to use the min-max function for a certain length of time whilst cruising at a steady speed. I would then hold the values recorded whilst I stopped and then look to see if I picked up a min reading drastically below the expected value at the speed I had been driving, thus suggesting an interruption in the output. At this stage, I don't know if it that will be necessary. All I know is that the problem is intermittent and does not result in a malfunction of the system.

I totally agree that it always pays to check the simple causes - they will always be a possibility. In this case, my plan is to monitor from the connector in the cabin as indicated by Autodata. This way I will pick up on any physical faults in the wiring as well as a possible bad sensor.

Should help with your fluke. Some of its basic but there are others worth reading. Good for other dvm's if they have the right functions as well.

My Volvo 940 used to do this. It was because the castleated (sp?) discs for the ABS on the front hubs which generated the ABS pulses were corroded. Cleaning them with a wire brush helped for a while, but eventually they needed to be replaced.

Thanks, Alan. Reg has already pointed at a possible sensor ring problem so I'll be giving them a good clean & inspection when I change the discs & pads in the next few weeks. I'm hoping that this will be the cause because it would save me from having to fart about with a meter, plus the rings are probably (I think) the cheapest parts in the system.
