Driving with an unconnected turbo?

I friend has a '99 Escort TD which has split the outlet hose from the turbo to the intercooler, he can't get it replaced for a couple of days. It's obviously down on power and noisy but will he do any damage if he drives it for, say, 400 miles? I seem to remember tales of running a turbo without a load is liable to have it spinning too fast but that may just be me getting old.

Cheers

turbos run at incredible revs in the first place. many cars run for months with split pipes and the owners don't notice!

so I say don't worry about it.

How about that old standby duct[1] tape?

Hmmm, given the heat and pressure (and the fact a new bit of 3" hose is

54quid from Ford) I don't think Duck (?) tape is really up to the job.

Shouldn't do any harm. Maybe exhaust bandage could be used for a temporary repair. Mike.

If it's either straight or a defined angle (45/90/135 degrees) then try a universal Samco (or similar) Silicone hose. If it's really short, I may have a spare bit going somewhere. That hose is pressure safe and will happily live in 200 degrees environments. It does start to give up if it is only 20mm from a hot turbo exhaust manifold...

A typical 90 degree bend of 52mm diameter is around £25-30

I did think about using something like that (a nice yellow one ;-) ) but it's also a different diameter either end which ruined that idea.

Thanks for the offer, most kind.

Well this hose connects directly to the turbo outlet so it might be a bit warm.

I'm pretty sure you can get straight reducers, but only certain sizes. Try Europa on 44 (0) 1283 815609 or snipped-for-privacy@europaspares.com

Not that much pressure. Demon Tweaks are showing

SAMCO High Pressure Straight Turbocharger Hose (230°c)

£7.04-£12.55
