Ecotek gets a bollocking courtesy the ASA

Got a nice call from Kingston-on-Thames Trading Standards this morning to say that the ASA didn't believe the Ecotek tripe either :-) After

18 months they couldn't produce anything other than an 11 year old draft report on some clapped out Cavaliers and press reviews which they said proved their own claims (!)

"The complainant challenged the claims:

  1. "Transform your performance" UPHELD - "...the device would allow an air bleed into the intake manifold to occur only when the throttle was closed as the car was slowed by the engine (overrun conditions) and at idle ...It understood that, in most fuel injected cars, if the car was overrunning, the fuel supply to the engine would be cut off ...the device was unlikely to have a great effect on engine performance"

  1. "Save money on petrol" UPHELD - " ...insufficient to prove that there was a statistically significant improvement in fuel economy"

  2. "Reduce emissions". UPHELD - "...the results were not statistically significant"

"The Authority advised the advertisers to consult the CAP Copy Advice team for help with preparing future advertisements."

Whoops!

I'm gutted. You'll be telling me next that those magnet things don't work either :)

As a magnet for the coins in your wallet, yes they do!

What about Cataclean?

Well done ASA - and well done Trading Standards!

One line in the adjudication made me smile - "The advertisers sent a copy of the product's patent certificate...". Funnily, their lawyers _twice_ told me to remove the reference to the Patent from my web page (

) as "ourclient has no patent for this device". Hard to know how to respond tothat without using the word "liars" Tony

(replace "nospam" with "fuel" to reply)

PS Who feels brave enough to post this on Ecotek's forum? :-)

I did this morning from work. I saw the post go up but then 15 minutes later I couldn't get onto the forum, just got a blank page. I've just checked from home and I see my post has gone missing. I assume they're blocking the IP addresses of detractors.

Firstly, those magnet things do work. I've got a bunch of them holding stuff to my fridge door. As for Cataclean, that is also an excellent product. I did have a little difficulty applying it to the coat of my cat[1], but it is now very clean and smooth.

[1] The stitches come out next week, thanks for asking. ;-)

AFAIK only the 1p coins are magnetic.

I see they have put up an official response to the ASA's adjudication.

Looks like they are trying to discredit the ASA.

"Copper" coins have been made out of plated steel for some years. The cost of the original non-magnetic alloy was becoming prohibitive. Slot machines can no longer use magnets to detect dodgy 1p and 2p bits, but since no slot machines I know of take 'em it doesn't matter.

Gaming machines may not take them but lots of vending machines do.

Are you sure? I know they take silver but I've not noticed one that takes coppers.

Mind you, I don't use 'em much and I s'pose the effort involved in counterfeiting coppers would be unprofitable.

Did you know you can file a 50p down to an acceptable 10p?
