If it was leaking externally, so that exhaust was escaping, then you'd hear it. If it was leaking internally, then no.

Although the MOT should have picked that up

But then you'd never spot that on a visual inspection.

Was the fault found just by reading the codes (internal leak)? if so and it runs ok then just ignore it, if it runs badly then the first thing would be a clean. If it is an external leak then change the gasket first.

No. Some leakage is permissable.

Apparently it was spotted on an "express visual inspection". The car does seem to run well. I'm no expert and have never heard of a EGR valve before which is why I left my question. Thanks for all comments left. Much appreciated

there are loads of faults that are not part of the mot, usually they are not safety related. also there are major differences between mot station standards.

If the car runs well and has no warning lamp, (flashing glowpug lamp) then ignore it, I'd say. Maybe consider having the car scanned with VCDS.

FWIW, an EGR valve for a 1.9 TDI PD is £73 to £153 on ECP. Don't know how hard it is to fit.
