Engine Oil

Go to your FIAT dealer and see what they want for 5l of oil. My Ford dealer charges ~ £15 or so for 5 litres. If you go in often enough you might end up getting a small trade discount.

Why do you object to spending a fiver more? Get the right grade, make sure it meets the relavent API / ACEA specs and shove it in.

If you've got a Makro card they're selling 4.5 litre Castrol GTX Magnatec Modern 10-40W at £9.99 plus Vat.

What should I do with my current Magnatec though, I've probably got about 1l left over from my last oil change. Would it be safe to mix it with the Fiat stuff, or is it not ideal?

Erm, I don't want to spend £20 when I can get the same product for less than £5, that's why I object. The extra £5 is pure profit!

I know, but my car takes 15W-40 :-(. I originally got my 15W-40 in there for around that price. 10W-40 is probably around £25-£30 in Halfrauds :-o

Use it if you like. I wouldn't use it if it's the wrong grade, but I'm perfectly happy to mix different brands of oil.

If you can't get the grade of oil you want for £15, but you can for £20, it's not the same product. The five quid difference might be pure profit. It might not be. Why should you give a toss? Buy it as cheap as you can find it and get the right grade for your engine. OTOH, some engines will use a load of different oils; The Jaguar AJ6 has about 8 specced in the handbook according to temperature variations.

Pretty sure the stuff I've got sat in the shed is 15W-40. It cost me a tenner (Castrol GTX or something) for 5l. Shop around, try motor factors instead of Halfords etc.

I don't really want to go for the GTX, I think Magnatec is just a better version of the GTX. I want a good quality one for my short trips.

The Magnatec stuff is marketing bullshit. Just get an oil that meets the proper tech specs, and if FIAT have their own oil specs, those too.

She was trying to tell me not to get the oil etc. yesterday because there's still two weeks until 6 months is up lol. I got the impression that she didn't want me to change the oil for a while.

Yeah, shame about the mechanics these days. I want to take my car to a mechanic, but the last time that happened he said there was nothing wrong with it. I think I may end up buying new Ignition coils which is about £50, but if it doesn't make a difference it'll be really annoying. If I asked the garage whether my coil needs replacing they'd just tell me that there's nothing wrong with the car again :-(.

The car isn't too bad to drive now, but the noise it makes is really worrying. Without further modification/repairs it's probably not going to last very long. On the bright side the engines are supposed to be pretty much bullet proof :-D
