Escort MOT work

Just taken my escort in for it's MOT today, got a phonce call to say it failed on corroded brake pipes, was quoted an absolute top price of £80 to put it right. Later on i got another call to say the corrosion was so bad that they couldn't get the pipes off the flexible hoses and they would replace them aswell.

I did know about the brake pipes as i'd noticed them last time i was under the car but not had any time to do anything about them.

What would people way would be the top price i should be paying to have all this done? I've used this garage before and they've always seems OK but you can nver be too careful i suppose.

The flexy pipes are "around" £15 +vat each . Twenty years ago brake pipe was "50p a foot plus 50p a fitting" to get made up. Then there is the labour removing the old pipes and bending and fitting the new pipes. Have they got all the bleed nipples undone yet? If not buget for one or two broken off ones, yet more expense. I try and avoid jobs like this, they have a way of getting more and more expensive, and yet the car still feels exactly the same to drive. steve the grease

It ended up costing =A3170 in the end. =A335 was for the MOT, =A360 was for labour the pipes and flexi hoses came to about =A350 and the rest was VAT. Could have cried when i got the bill as i had to go and tax it straight after but i suppose i can forget about it for another year now. Looks like i'm shopping at lidl for the next few weeks :(

I've had a few cars fail on "corroded brake pipes". Once they'd been wire brushed though it often turned out to be nothing more than surface rust and they then passed.

Been advised to do that on a small patch myself, and with about 4 miles of brake pipe to replace if I don't, and an ABS system to flush. It would be stupid not to.

Just need to get the bloody thing on a ramp to see properly.
