Espace V6 clutch

If your clutch is slipping, adjustment of the cable may not cure it. Check the free play of the pedal. Does it go down a little before it starts to get harder when it releases the clutch? If this is the case then at least the cable is not too tight and so causing the clutch mechanism never to be fully engaged. The other side of the coin is that the cable is so slack that you have to press the pedal to the floor to get the clutch to release. This does not adversely affect the clutch mechanism, but too tight a cable, i.e. with no free play, does.

But if you've got free play already, as you should have, it sounds as thought you need a new clutch.

Big V6- loads of power but 87,000 is early to wear out. Maybe someone drives with their foot resting on the clutch pedal DaveK.

Obviously dependant on many factors, but in my experience that is not a particularly low mileage to get clutch problems - bear in mind that a slipping clutch doesnt necessarily mean the driven plate linings are worn out in the sense that they are past the minimum. I would guess that it isnt the cable and that the clutch has had it - if this is the case, I would fit a whole kit because the labour involved is generally awkward.

I take it you only slip the clutch to get going in first or reverse gear ? If you ( like my girlfriend ) slip it on down changes and indeed badly timed up changes, then obviously you are adding unnecessary wear and tear :-)

I don't think there's a cable - I think it's hydraulic. But I'm not sure 'cos the Haynes manual doesn;t cover (or acknowledge the existance of!) the V6!

Got some prices today - varied from about £300 to £620 (Wests Renault), with a likely candidate in the middle at about £500. Labour seemed to vary from

If I'm right and it is hydraulic, am I right in thinking there's nothing else that can cause slip? If not then I guess I gotta bite the bullet (bank manager?!) and get a new clutch.

As far as driving style (or lack of) goes, I guess I do tend to slip the clutch a bit generally. But I've only had the car for a week, so I hope I'm not that ham fisted that I've knackered it already!

Clutches often fail just after buying a secondhand car. Why, I dunno. Perhaps that's one of the reasons it was sold.
