F reg Escort clutch problem..

Hi..

Need a bit of help sorting out a clutch problem..

Basically the clutch has to be pressed hard against the floor to even think about disengaging so getting it into gear is a real headache and reverse is a challenge..

The clutch itself feels fine, no slipping or anything..

I searched around and this seems to be a common problem related to the auto adjuster or a stretched cable..

I have tried putting in some spacers on the cable to shorten it a little but this made no difference so I am guessing its not a stretched cable..

I had a feel around the auto adjustment thing and it feel like its in good shape, teeth seem to be good, but this seems to be a common problem with these going by what I found on the internet.. I do sometimes hear a click when I am pressing the clutch repeatedly but it still only works right down on the floor..

So what am I looking for to tell if the adjuster is the problem? How much do these cost? Are they hard to fit? (it doesn't look like there is much space to work down there)

Thanks

Aye, the click is a classic sign of a knackered adjuster. Ford do a kit to replace it with a manual conversion.

Hi Andy..

Thanks for the info..

Any idea on the cost of the kit and how hard it is to fit?

The bits for the kit are about £20 IIRC, should take an hour or so to fit depending on your mechanical ability. They aren't so much hard to do, but they are very, very fiddly (like little bits that fall out everywhere).

If it's going click the adjusters dead, just buy a new one, £15-£20, if you're not particularly skinny, it's easier to take the drivers seat out when changing it, it's not difficult but as you say, there's not a lot of space.

Don't buy one, at least not 'til I post back here around 2am.

My brother has had one knocking about since he got shut of his escort, it's still in the sealed Motorcraft bag, yours for postage if you want it/and he still has it.

I'm going to his tonight, I'll try remember...

The clutch is gone. The diaphragm spring is so weak it cannot disengage the clutch. No amount of spacers or new cable adjuster will fix this.

Clutches die in different ways nowadays.
