Clutch problem Golf 3

Hello y'all!

8V GTI 1996. I replaced the gearbox a few months back.

At the time, I noticed that the clutch pedal/biting

point was quite low, although I had replaced the

clutch at the same time as the 'box (might as well),

so it wasn't clutch wear. Anyway, thought it might be

the clutch cable, as they're notoriously bad (it's the

auto-adjuster version). I replaced the cable over the

weekend, and if anything, it's worse. It's quite close

to not actually disengaging the clutch with the pedal

fully depressed. I then noticed that the clutch

operating arm on the gearbox has quite a bit of

travel. This seems to be the problem. Anyone got any

ideas as to why this would be? It can't be clutch

wear, as it's only done a few thousand miles since

replacement.

Thanks all...
