Fiesta temp gauge

I've a Fiesta 1.25 Zetec-SE 'S'-reg..... problem is that the temperature gauge seems to be permanently stuck on cold. Ever so often it may move up so it's just bordering on the 'normal' section, but then usually moves back into cold again.

The engine itself seems to be warming up OK, with hot air blowing through the dashboard vents within a few minutes of starting up. From this I'm assuming that the thermostat's OK, and it's a problem with the engine's temperature sensor/sender.

Am I correct in reaching this conclusion, and if so where is it located and how easy is it to replace?

Thanks for any replies.

Think yourself lucky you've got a temp gauge - a lot of Fiestas didn't get one at all (well, certainly the diesel vans anyway)

My 1.3 Endura-E also lacks a temperature gauge. It does at least have a small light to warn if its overheating. Of course I've no idea if the sensor actually works or not, because I've never seen it come on except in "test" mode when I turn the key...

Is an incorrectly-functioning temperature gauge better than no gauge then?

Sounds like a typical example of a stuck open thermostat to me. You sure the heater is working as well as it always has ?

IME temp sensors either work or don't.

In the same way that a stopped clock is better than a clock that's 20 minutes slow, because at least the stopped clock is right twice a day?

What you describe is exactly the symptoms I had on my car a while ago - stat cured it, was stuck open.

Hmmm... that's what I was dreading!

A quick look at the Haynes manual in Halfords suggested you need to remove the alternator to get at the thing, with the section for that being a four spanner jobbie....

I suspect I'll be popping down to the local garage then!

Count yourself lucky - on my car you have to take the cambelt off!
