Follow on From Spray Paint Question

Hi All

I finally got round to spraying my car today, well the section in question...

I prepared it all etc and did the primer yesterday as it said to leave it 24 hours. I sprayed the colour today (2 Coats) and then it said wait 30 mins and add the clear coat.

I have just done the clear coat and although it is kinda wet still, the paint work seems to be very "Matt" and not shiny at all.

Have I done something wrong or will a good polish etc at a later date sort it out? Or will it start to get abit shiny when its dried? Oh, Its metallic by the way!

Thanks

Karl

Right, ignore that to an extent....

I just went out and re-sprayed the clearcoat and its shining very well now... the only thing is, my Dad came out and helped and sprayed abit too much and made it run.

Is there a way to get rid of this when it dries? Would something like a rubbing compound work at all?

Thanks for any advice...

Karl

Leave it for a couple of days to harden then use a cutting compound - T cut will be ok if it's a small area, or the least hard work stuff Farecla.

You may need to get some 1000 grade wet and dry, mount it on a rubbing block and use that to take the high spots off the runs. If you try to polish them off with a cutting compound you'll probably end up with very shiny runs!

Sounds like I would need a doctor rather than something to do with cars!!

Thanks for the advice, Ill have a look how bad its turned out in a min!

This is a common mistake. You're better off with several thin coats which end up dull, than one thick shiny one with runs. Because the dull paint can be easily compounded to a shine, while getting rid of runs can be difficult and you might well go through the paint when sanding them out. So have to do it again.

Compounding removes (within reason) an equal amount of paint all over, so won't get rid of runs. You need to sand them down with a 'rigid' block if it's a reasonably flat surface.
