Ford RS Turbo Engine Problems

Ive recently bought a '90 Escort RS Turbo which has been in the family since new. Just after i bought it, i noticed that shortly after beginning a journey the car would kind of stutter, in a way lose power for a brief second and then continue as normal. Over the next few months the problem gradually got worse and worse to the point where i was being jolted by the stuttering so much i thought i might make a claim for whiplash.

So the cars been in to the main Ford dealer 3 times now. The first time they changed the number 2 spark lead, and for a week or so the problem appeared to have been solved, but then it started again. The previous 2 visits to the garage has seen all the spark plugs replaced along with the ignition coil. Unfortunately, after driving the car tonight the problem appears to be worse than its ever been. Now not only does the car stutter worse than gareth gates when hes nervous, but it cannot idle without cutting out. There also appears to be a definate 'clicking' noise coming from the engine when the accelerators in use, it does actually sound like a spark coming from a lead. The more the accelerators pressed, the quicker the clicking is.

Anyone have a clue what the hells going on here?

They only changed one HT lead? I'd do them all - sometimes they can sag when they get warm and short out on a bit of engine.

Get a new set of leads and a new set of plugs - NOW.

Damaged leads can, and often do cause spark plugs to fail.
