Would there really be less much at the inboard end? Could be that there's already brackets and mechanicals to mount them on at the far end that don't exist next to the gearbox.
Or, no-one's ever thought of doing it that way before...
T'Ford Escort (Mk III/IV) used to have an "alternative" ABS lash-up according to Mr Haynes. Instead of sensors on the hub there was some sort of belt arranement from driveshaft to a rotary sensor. Only got their line drawings to go on but it all looked a bit Heath Robinson.
