ford transit 2.5 diesel

i have just changed the diesel timing pump on my transit its an m reg but has bannana type manifold the old pump was full of metal fragments looks like some sort of washer broke up in the pump, its the bosch pump i now have another problem van is a non turbo diesel i now have heavy white smoke at idle speed along with bad idling but once vans on the move no smoke to speak of and pulls ok does anyone have any ideas van did drive with broken pump but was gutless and engine only smoked on start up before but cleared in a minute or two please help before i go mad , could the pump be to far retarded causing this problem or is it likeley to be more sinister

It sounds like the idle advance is insuffecient, try advancing the pump & see if it cures it, if so put it back before trying to drive it & talk to whoever sold you the pump about a new advance .

is the advance the black selonoid on the side of the pump, when i set the timing i set it static using the correct timing pins is it possible that if i advance the pump timing via the belt, it could cure the problem or does it mean taking the pump back again was not cheap .

Who would have thought one comma would be such a relief after reading all that...

If it's the pump I'm thinking of yes. If it runs fine with reasonable fuel consumption under load then advancing it on the belt won't help, there'll be too much advance under normal running, was it a new pump or 2nd hand?

its a second hand pump, has a warranty with it though so can return it

you should have heard the swearing ,after laying out in the rain till all hours changing it ,only to be greeted by this issue, i can assure you there were no commas between the swear words.

Some bloody puntuation would help us, if not the van!

As moray will be along to tell us before long i am sure, the pumps and injectors are a matched set on these engines- wrong injectors matched to wrong pump will cause exactly your symptoms.

Seeing as the van starts, and runs well enough, save for the white smoke at idle, i will pretty much guarentee you now dont have the right injectors.

It's probably worth popping round to your local diesel specialist & getting them to check the timing first, white smokes almost certainly late injection.

sorted it out at last, it was pump timing ,still a bit smelly, but no smoke and no misfire thanks all for info

So somebody did suggest it! Yeah, if you fit the later bosch pump, then you need the later injectors to suit.

Lucas pumps were fitted up until the pre-facelift model, and Bosch were fitted after, so any injectors fitted to the post-facelift models should do the trick. The later injectors had a higher opening pressure, so that is most likely your problem (timing will most likely be out at idle due to it).
