Frontera oil pressure gauge

I have just purchased a 1993 LWB Frontera 2.3 diesel 129k miles.

My query (problem) is this...

..when the ignition is switched on the oil pressure reading immediately goes off the scale and sits there even whilst running. When the ignition is turned

off, the oil pressure reading continues to be off the scale. Over a period of

time -don't know yet exactly how long (hours?)- e.g., overnight, the reading returns to zero but, again on switching on the ignition it returns to the high reading and continues to sit there.

I have monitored the oil level and everything is fine.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

My thoughts:

electrical/ guage?

oil pump pressure release valve?

oil filter pressure release valve?

I would value any help to enable me to resolve this.

Cheers and thanks.

The gauge will be a hot wire type which reacts slowly to changes, but shouldn't react *that* slowly as it would be useless for showing a problem

- if the oil pressure dropped quickly, it wouldn't. Sounds like it's getting far too many volts and is sticking on max.

Likely reasons are a faulty sender, gauge, voltage regulator, or a short in the wiring.

Oil level would only effect the pressure gauge if it was empty and the engine would be destroyed shortly after starting.

I'm going for the faulty oil sender switch on the engine block or wiring as it looks the easiest. I'll let you know how I make out.
