thanks for the lead, they have quite a range of flowmeters, but their prices seem more suited to industrial applications than hobbiest tinkering. i got a second (non invasive) idea to accurately measure mpg, procedure below

-head for a deserted track

-drain tank with a handpump as far as possible into a jerrycan

-drive car till it stops, in tank there will remain the minimum level of fuel which the car can suck

-add 1 litre of fuel

-drive till it stops again, noting km travelled

any opinions on errors which could impact my calculation?

thx

Hmm...I think you jest; with such a small quantity the slightest deviation in track level will throw calculation out.

Never done it myself but folks 'brim' their tanks and zero the trip mileometer. Many recorded miles later they check how much fuel they need to 'brim' the tank again, sit down with a calculator and work out their consumption.

Fuel tanks are rarely level. If you really want to do it like that, fill the tank to brimful with the car leaning slightly away from the filler. Do your driving, measure how much it takes to refil.
