If you get one of those adhesives that stubbornly refuses to budge, might I suggest eucalyptus oil, available from any chemists shop - works a treat - and doesn't vapourise in a split second like one or two of the suggested solvents. Clears the nostrils at the same time, and relieves cold symptoms as well , :-)

I once acidentally broke the nozzle from a can of lighter gas, and rather than have it squirt everywhere (or freeze my fingers trying to stop it) I tipped it into a milk bottle that was handy - then took it outside and lit it, where it burned like the eternal flame for quite a while before it all boiled off.

Doesn't this turn the surrounding area into an unexploded bomb?

Same here. If you spray enough on, you don't even need to be that quick. Watch out for frostbite though!

In a well ventilated area, and without going overboard as GK says, then it's not a really dangerous situation. In such small quantities, as would be used for a small stain removal job, it evaporates off far to quickly to allow it to linger around.

I found out about it being a good solvent from a clock maker. They use it to remove grease and things from the clock working, but it evaporates so quickly not to cause damp that catches further dust and dirt deposits again.

If you are thinking of the deep ocean deposits I think you'll find they are methane and solid.

It's usually butane gas IIRC.

Actually, anywhere where the temperature is below about 0C.

Don't use petrol as a solvent. Apart from the explosion hazard (which is very real), since they took the lead out the replacements are _far_ worse as acute toxins.

Butane refuses to vapourise in the winter, hence the popularity of propane.

Still not a viable liquid solvent though - your fingers would keep freezing to things.

You live an learn. My new fact for today boiling point of Butane at 1.013 bar ("normal" atmospheric pressure) is -0.5C.

Mind you I don't recall seeing puddles of butane about last winter...

I have used it for some things. But, keeping it in the freezer while it does its job is not ideal. (Especially as you have to be very aware of the fuel-air mixture in the freezer)
