how do i find out if my gearbox is goosed or my selector.lost my 1+3+5 gears

Most likely one of the gear cables has failed partially, meaning it's not moving the linkages as far as it should.

On older Fiestas it used to be the gate that the gear lever slots into, it's badly secured and gets out of alignment over time (and there's a spring there that can go). Got a quote for £720 to replace the gearbox and got the gate adjusted for £40 instead...
The synchromesh went on 2nd and 4th on that car as well (1.6, so they need to take the engine out for any of that type of work), got a quote for a similar amount for that but just double-declutched or avoided the gears. Much cheaper. The car's scrapped now, though.
