It would then be a portable container rather than a fuel tank on a vehicle, so would be unsuitable to receive petrol dispensed from a petrol station.

Well I have filled it like this at a number of petrol stations. OK not in last 3-4 years.
In future I'll just sneak up on an unattended card in slot 24hr ASDA petrol station. No one to say no there.
my father in law has loads of those old fashioned metal oil containers that used to hold 5 litres of duckhams oil...... all now rusty and the yellow and blue paint has all flaked off.
he takes ten of these to the local petrol station and fills all 10 with unleaded for his ride on lawnmower... every month during the mowing season.
In 30 years he has never been challenged on it........
Several internet sites appearing to be advertising it.

Can has to be clearly marked and designed for the purpose. It's a legal requirement. The diesel/petrol cans are cheap and TBH I would expect to buy one in such a case. Dave
Is your car a Diesel? Some makes have installed a mechanism in the filler pipe that it is supposed to lessen the chance of misfiling with petrol ,a correct sized diesel nozzle lets fuel be admitted but anything different can make filling awkward. Hence some makers also supply a nozzle to let you do so from a can/funnel. Probably a reasonable bet that some have laid unused amongst the jack/towing eye etc without the driver knowing what it is for while trickling diesel from a can over the bodywork and trousers by the side of the road in a gale.

There were some completely unattended fuel stations experimented with some 20 ish years ago. Esso ISTR. I wonder how the rules were enforced then or they just took a gamble ,maybe there was a video link and the remote "attendant" was supposed to spot any cans and hit a stop button. Way before then there were those insert a pound note and obtain some fuel auto pump dispensers at some places intended for self service when the place was otherwise closed.
Horrifies me now but I do recall a journey made carefully at about
3am into the New Forest from Totton after using one of those in a mission to recover a mates car who had run out. Only can we could find was a lidless paint tin in a skip at the garage. Fairly clean already the first pint of petrol or two was used to cleanl it out and then we filled it to about 1/2 way. The journey back was undertaken with us taking turns to hold it out of the window of a Mini. Fortunately there was no mishap and the New Forest and ourselves survived unscathed, unfortunately so did Totton.G.Harman
A quick google also shows it in metal cans.
