Seconded. VW TDI for less money. Reliability must be ok, because lots of them are used as taxis.

Either the 110 or 130bhp TDI Leon or Toledo. VW at Asda prices

Look hard enough and they're out there for that money. I just sold one for a customer, 53 plate, 16000 miles, £6495. Base spec one, had leather and AC, but small alloys and no toys.

Dark blue with cream leather, not the most immaculate car in the world, but certainly not a dog. Mainly supermarket dings, but nothing that couldn't be sorted for £100 by your local Dent Man.

I've got a Golf GTi 2.0 there, 5 door, 2000 X reg, 133000 miles, big alloys, pimp glass, AC, Recaros, VW history to 100k, needs a few cosmetics but is ok £2700. I imagine that's worth a fair bit more as well.

Should be able to find a Golf 4 or Leon around that price. Leon is a remakably nice car to drive. You'll find early A classes around that money, and IIRC Dervy's saab was in that budget too and is very good.

Old S40s are plenty around that money too.
