Hi To All My son has just bought a 51 reg golf tdi 130 with 40000 on the clock with full VW service history The cam belt is due for renewal at 60k but would it be worth me doing this early or are TDI golfs ok to run to 60k.
Also is it worth paying the price for Mobil 1 diesel oil as it is about £38 for 5 litres !!!
Thanks

Hi.
I'd have said yes and yes. I've not heard of any problems related to early cambelt failure on these engines, and 60k isn't an excessive time to leave it, and generally a lot of manufacturers' guidelines err more on the side of caution than they used to, so I'd say it should be ok.
Having said that, cambelts should be replaced with age as well, and often the recommendation is every 4 years, maybe every 5, so it might be advisable to do it based on age and not mileage. Obviously if he is going to rack up the miles in it, then 20k won't take too long, and it'd be worth booking it in at a convenient time a few thousand miles before 60k just to be on the safe side.
Regarding the oil - I'd say so, these engines place a lot of demand on the oil they use, so it *must* be to a decent standard. As long as it's got the VW specification numbers that the handbook says it should have, then it should be fine.
