Granada fault codes/Vane Air Flow Meter

The car is a 1987 Granada Scorpio 2.9 with a couple of faults. If the car is taken for a short run (10-15 minutes) then left to stand for a few minutes, it will occasionally not restart ? the engine will turn over, but will not fire up for anything between a couple of minutes, or in the worst case an hour and a half. Occasionally it has started fine, but shortly afterwards cut out (just stopped dead, no spluttering, etc.) and again taken some time to restart. I had the RAC out to it on a few occasions, who couldn?t find where the problem lay, and the car always just started eventually with no work having to be done. The other problem is the temperature gauge reading very high ? the needle reaching the top of the gauge after only five or ten minutes running from cold.

No one seemed able to track down the cutting out problem very easily, and I needed a reliable car, so the Granada was put aside for a while. Today I picked up a Gunson fault code reader and stuck it on the car, which gave me code 13 ? ?Engine Coolant Temperature sensor? and code 16 ? ?Vane Air Flow meter 2?

Code 13 actually only came up the first time I ran the tests, but could a faulty ECT have a bearing on the temperature gauge reading?

And is it possible that a faulty VAF meter could display the starting/stalling problems outlined above?

Any advice greatly appreciated :)
