Help - water pump or alternator?

Been getting a rattly/squeeky noise from the car, combined with the alternator warning light coming on and off and moderate overheating. I've established the belt is not slipping (its not that kind of noise) and is in good condition and properly tensioned. I'm fairly sure its either the alternator or water pump making the noise, and causing the other to not work as it should. Is there any easy way to establish which is causing the problem? A screwdriver to the ear on the water pump sounds very rough, so that would be my thought, but access to the alternator is not easy. Any tips? The car in question is a Toledo 1.9Tdi which is the VAG 110 engine...

Isn't the water pump driven by the timing belt on the TDI, and the alternator by the auxiliary belt? Drop the aux belt off.
