How hard can it be? gearbox change

I need to change the gearbox on a Skoda Felicia estate 1.6

I've heard it is very similar to a VW golf.

Does the engine need to come out in order to change the gearbox?

I know this is a question like how long is a bit of string - but how involved a job is this? Is it possible as a one-man job?

Thanks all

It is possible if you've got something to support the gearbox when you try to realign it.

Standard FWD gearbox routine:

Press fit driveshaft: Split bottom ball joints on either side. Pull bottom of strut out to remove driveshafts

Bolt on driveshaft: Unbolt driveshaft from flange on gearbox.

In some cases you'll need to remove starter motor. Undo clutch cable. Undo reverse light warning cable. Undo speedo cable. Unbolt gearchange linkage.

Work on around 5-6hrs if its your first time.

Amazing how much faster it gets with practice though. First engine change I did on a Metro took for ever - second one took two of us about three hours including getting the donor to let go.

My record on a Ford Cortina was 20 minutes with the use of a ramp.
