I can't get the Micra gearbox filler out!

May 12, 2006 5 Replies

On my daughter's K11 1998 998cc Micra, I cannot shift the gearbox, filler/level plug, so I cannot check the level.

I've never been able to shift it (had the car since 6k, now done 48k), so I took it to my friendly local garage who have things like proper tools and lifts, and they gave up also! Looking at the state of the filler plug now, they tried REALLY hard, but were worried they'd crack the casing.

They advised, if it ain't leaking, leave it alone it'll probably be OK.

Does this sound like good advice?

Alternatively, is there any other way I can check/add oil to the gearbox?

do a search in the forums.I vaguely remember that someone reported accidentally using the wronghole, with success.

The message from Ian Stirling contains these words:

Bugger that.

Yes you can successfully use the wrong hole. But it is good manners to ask permission first.

You do however need to use top quality lubricant.

Thanks for the pointer. The answer seems to be to use the speedo hole to fill up. Not being able to get the proper filler plug out seems to be a common problem!
