JCB digger 1975 year approx

Hi Group,

Anyone out there able to offer advice on maintenance of a JCB. Problem I have with it is the steering is very heavy. Although it is a bit better if you give the engine some revs. Otherwise machine works well. Just would like to sort the steering out.

Power steering pump at fault? Do these have them or is it linked to the hydraulics somehow?

Haven't had a look yet just thought I would ask first.

Please only constructive replies.

I'm not sure if the PAS gets its power from the main pump via a priority valve, or if it's separate on this vintage of JCB= a quick look under the bonnet will reveal this though.

I assume the oil level is fine as you dont mention any noise or jerky response, and the if the PAS pump is separate then i would diagnose a worn pump.

If it works through a priority valve from the main pump, then this could be sticking.

make sure each wheel can actually pivot, if they are very stiff to turn then the steering will have extra work overcoming the friction

snipped-for-privacy@tesco.net ( snipped-for-privacy@tesco.net) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

PDFs of the 700-odd page factory workshop manual seem to be widely available on the web for about a tenner. Seems to me that's decent value.
