Hi all

Looking at a 2002 Golf 1.6 soon. Does anyone know of any weak points where I should look at closely?

Thanks!

right on, you may also try whatcar.com

oryou can always go to a search engine such as Google and do a search?

Sounds like a lot of common faults there!

The wheezey, underpowered 1.6 engine under the bonnet.

That's not a lot by Honest John standards.

There's a known potential problem with the gearbox on 1.4/1.6 as well. Buy a 1.8T/2.0, V6, or diesel.

The v6's have a lovely sound! Or add a little extra money to the pot and get a R32.

Thanks all, can anyone say what the cambelt interval is for the car? It's done 66,000 miles.

did you not read the honest john Guide?

I did, missed that bit! 40,000 miles.

"1.4 16v and 1.6 16v engines have plastic timing belt pulleys which can shatter after about 40,000 miles, throwing off the belt, now failing regularly, though fortunately the belts are rarely flung off when this happens. (Led to advice from VAG to change timing belts and tensioners and pulleys at 4 years or 40k miles). Alarming number of water pump failures on

1.4s leading to timing belt failure as early as 4 years and 37,000 miles."
