latest engine news

Got over to car, checked oil, let it out and refilled to correct level.

Started it, it seemed fine, puff of smoke on start up but seemed to run on tickover ok, left it running for 10 min, bit of smoke out of breather pipe.

After a while i got someone to follow me to move car, as soon as i tried i could tell it was running on 3, i thought wierd as tick over seemed ok, he said no signs of smoke............ I got home about 5 miles, bits of backfire.

He said when i got home it seemed to smoke more. i heard no rattles or bangs.

I cant find my compression test kit and tonight i will fone some people in my car club with exp of this engine.

If its dead on a cylinder, with no bangs etc does that sound like a ring gone? The oil pressure seemed ok as i watched it like a hawk, maybe a fraction high when i was trying to get up hills but i kept revs as low as poss.

Also as its a 27 year old engine at least, and if i cant get bits from my car club, whats the best way to locate them? thanks

A decent engine reconditioners. Depends on where you are in the country, in the East I normally try Lyndale in Peterborough first & then Ivor Searle. Lyndale have more than once told me it'll be cheaper to go down the scrapyard as I'm looking at something with no known history of failure.

Might be worth checking that a plug lead hasn't gone or come loose - not necessarily as a result of changing oil (where you might have snagged a lead as you did the work), but I have known a plug lead that was a bit tired simply fracture due to the natural vibration of the engine.

You haven't said whether you spilled any oil over the engine when filling it up - could this be a factor?

Checked that. I wouldnt have expected tick over to be ok. I was oging to replace all the leads some time ago but the cost was about £70. very deep weird things. would have had to made up acc to the shop

Checked that too, i always spill a bit........cleaned up tho.

Im not keen on refurbs, dont generally trust them, plus i dont think outside my car club i would find another engine.

Im hoping the damage isnt too severe.

Errm Hotwires fit & Halfords amazingly still sell them

Depends who you buy them off, there's a big difference between a remanufactured engine & a pile of pressurewashed junk bought near a big airport.

You won't get an engine but you might get the bits to fix the old one.

They might "fit", but they don't plug the hole like the originals are designed to do. If you want it to look original, there's only one way. And Toyota certainly know how to charge for things like that!

All of my Toyota engines, apart from a naff 80's design have been bullet proof so never had to get bits for them, so its new to me.

Had the odd head skimmed etc but found we decarbonising and good oil the pistons etc usually last way longer than the car.

tried them, i had to get the lenth and type of ends matched up. i had 2 wrong sizes at first off the shelf.

Toyota say they dont do them now, nothing close to the pattern, yes for my

79 but not for my 77 as they stopped that engine around 78.

I had to look in this catalogue thing and tray to match the ends etc. the ends have a seal mouled on the end to cover the deep drop down the rocker cover.

The weakest engine i came accross was the 21R from early 80's, i had a oil seal failure behind a pulley and Toyota wanted over 14 quid, in the end i went to city seals and bearing and got the exact same for less than 2 quid.
