Locking Wheel Nut

Hi, a few months after buying my car, Nissan Primera (R reg), I found a funny shaped socket in a cubby hole. Not knowing what it was I binned it.

At a service today the garage asked where the key was for the locking wheel nuts. I now realise what the odd looking socket was for. My previous old bangers never needed to have locking doors so having locking wheels is a bit sophisticated for me!

Anyway how do I get these off? The garage said they could do it with difficulty. What about a specialist tyre fitter (I'm coming close to needing new tyres)? Can I buy a replacement key somewhere?

Any help would be appreciated.

LOL! - Whoops.

What should work, unless they're a particularly upmarket type of locking wheel nut, is just bashing a slightly undersized socket that you don't particularly care for, over each locking nut in turn, and replacing them with a new set, which should come with a key, which you'll now remember not to chuck away!!

Tyre places have a tool which is a socket with a left hand thread on the inside of it for getting these off. So have I. I bought the set after getting several callouts to this problem, and in accordance with Murphy's law, I haven't had a single one since. Apart from a test when I got them, they're still unused. Let me know if you have a BH postcode, I'd love to use them before I die :-))

Most tyre places keep special sockets to remove these, screwfix sell a set too.

What's the point of locking wheel nuts if your average thief can just pick up a set easily and remove your nuts?

That is true, however they are at least arguably effective against your less-than-average thief... ;-)

Halfords sell a Laser locking wheel nut remover, which is basically a nut with a female LH thread to grip and remove the nut. Obviously you'll need 4 replacement nuts (locking or ordinary) afterwards.

The best ones have a spinning collar outside the nut itself.

the screwfix ones are laser brand too, about twenty quid for a set of four sizes.

If anyone wants your wheels desperately enough they'll get them. Ditto the entire car.

The point of locking nuts is to confound the average opportunist low-life. Beyond that they are "going equipped", which I believe is a crime in itself.
