Loss of coolant - Matiz

Checked the oil of my elderly mothers Matiz the other day and noticed brown stains around the expansion bottle and that the fluid was low. Topped it up, drove for a few miles, got back to check and noticed on revving the engine the water rose up the bottle and was overflowing. To me this is a sign that a) corrosion is going on somewhere (I suspect the mechanic she uses has not topped up with the correct ratio of antifreeze to water), b) either the head gasket has gone, or there is another reason why pressure is building in the system.

The engine has done 16k and is used infrequently. It was not obviously overheating. I was not able to do any other checks due to lack of time. Any ideas appreciated - her mechanic has had a brief look and told her to keep it topped up and that it should be fine until he can fix it in 3 weeks time or so. I have advised her that if the head gasket has gone, it might be better to get it fixed sooner, or not use it at all.

It might just be air in the system. Change the coolant with a speedchanger & if it holds vaccuum it might be fine.
