Marea HLX Timing belt - any ideas how big a job?

Yup, the ideal solution. So long as you make them from a quality metal, they never wear out. The only downside is that they'd probably add width to an already wide lump, plus there's no natural take-off to drive the PAS, aircon and alternator..... unless you want to drive some or all off a chain, as bikes do, but that creates a whole load of new packaging issues.

Silly idea to design a transverse inline 5, but it's a wonderful lump and I'm glad someone in Fiat was mad enough to do it.

Bloody 'ell! I thought Daewoo were bad...

Not half as bonkers as the V10 that Volvo had in the labs - built out of 2 5 clyinder 2.5 engines a-la the 850 (10 cylinder, 40 valves - OUCH when that goes bang huh?). Apparently (an old friend was working on it) spectacularly powerful, amazing performance - right up until it self destructed (usually after a number of miles

Thanks to everyone who posted - essentially the advice is then to avoid unless VERY cheap (which it isn't that cheap).

Yes.

I paid £800 for mine, R-plate, with 64k miles on it when I bought it. The cambelt had been changed on 38k miles, meaning it had another 34k miles to go before it needed a belt.

So far, I've done 8k miles in it - in 7 months.

I'll probably keep it another 12 months, then flog it before it gets too close to the next sheduled change.

I bought a Marea estate that was due a belt change. It had 1/2 tank of petrol and I still only paid £50.
