Mazda vans- are they any good?

Hi, I'm looking for a camper van, smallish, been looking at vw s etc. But just lately noticed there are a couple of companies importing Mazdas, such as the Mazda Bongo, and another, bigger one which is a more direct parallel to your typical vw camper

seems you can get a diesel such as the Mazda Bongo a hell of a lot cheaper, newer, and much lower mileage than a vw camper for your money. The vw seems to carry a big premium coz it is a cult brand, even if you are not going for the old classic type.

BUT

does any one have any idea what kind of mileage you could expect to get out of a Mazda diesel engine?

does any one know if these vans are good lasters, good to maintain, reasonable for rust in the long term?

I know these engines are not made to be worked on/reconditioned like a vw engine... just wondering whether they are a good buy?

thanks if anyone has any experience or mechanical opinions about these vehicles

cheers

They're imports. Unles brand new, you have absolutely no way of checking how they've been maintained or whether they were write-offs. DO NOT trust any service history you're shown.

Well that applies to anything though. They seem to be a pain to find service information for, e.g. pump timing etc.
