Pug 106 rear axle

The o/s rear wheel on my 106 is starting to lean in at an alarming angle, so I presume the bearing holding the trailing arm is kaput. Is it a reasonable diy task to change the radius arm bearing on a 96 model? I expect the usual rusty seized bolts etc, but other than that is there anything nasty about the way the bearing is fitted?

================ The manual states that it's definitely not a DIY job and it certainly doesn't look as if you can do it without a special tool to extract the bearing from the end of the axle tube. The manual also states that this bearing rarely fails so your problem might lie elsewhere. Have you checked the wheel bearing? That's a more likely failure point and certainly quite an easy job to do.

I don't know about the pug axle but Citroens have been using a trailing arm and I have changed a few complete arms. Of course the Citroens have the advantage of being able to retract the suspension which makes life easier; I would imagine you'd have to compress the rear spring or summat. I got a couple of arms from the local scrappies, BX ones were cheapish (can't exactly rememember), XM ones from a scrap ona shelf place were £35 to £45. I had a couple of bearings replaced by a garage and one cost me £120, another place charged me £70.

Thanks for the informative posts. One garage I spoke to suggested the best way was to get hold of a second-hand rear axle assembly, as apparently they too had had many problems with torsion bars not wanting to come out.

Looks like I'll be touring the breakers yards rather than trying to repair what I've got.

for reconditioned units. No mention of 106 rear suspension units so maybe different type of suspension?

Scrapyards are not good places for replacements as often you will see cars in good overall condition being scrapped for this very reason.

The cost of replacement with new rear suspension from a peugeot dealer can be around £1000 or more. A non franchised Peugeot specialist will supply and fit for around £400.(second hand units)

Not a great diy person for this sort of work anyway, but I would not attempt this unless I had access to a proper workshop.
