no, once again you are wrong. according to the mot manual, the test standard is that applicable to the oldest bit, whether that is the engine or the car itself.

No, you kill th elow preeure feed to the pump (that's what the sooenoid does, it's built into the pump for convenience.

Yes, Much buggerin about was spent stopping doing it, you can only get them to run backwards on a mechanical pump if the cam profile will let them (most /might/) & it only tended to happen on engines attached to a hydraulic pump where the pump could be back pressured to reverse spin the engine. (For comedy value nothing beats the twin engined loco I once had to deal with where the two ends where trying to go in opposite directions simultaneously, we did assume the drivers where trying for an afternoon skive until we saw it do it)

It is not the same as pinching the fuel supply (which would induce a vacuum in the system and might suck in some air) it is more like a bypass.

Usually a cut-off solenoid operates. In ye-olden days, you had a cable to pull instead.

The fact is that there is nothing to stop someone getting a new car and sticking a morris minor engine in it, it would still pass the MoT emissions standard. It would also satisfy the OP question.

Some would run backwards and if they did you had a real problem. IIRC the Diesel engine from the Standard Vanguard and the early Massey 25 tractor, and also a Coventry Diesel (I'm sure there were others). They didn't have a mechanical governor on the fuel pump, but rather a bellows operated governor controlled by vacuum created by a venturi in the intake. When running backwards this didn't work and the engine ran up beyond design max revs in a few seconds and kerblammo.

It happens a *heck* of a lot in the Ford modding scene. Plenty of newer stuff running old school (I believe the term is "old skool") turbocharged CVHs.
