Mondeo Misfire (surprise surprise)

Right then.... I bought an N reg Mondeo 2.0 GLX the other day and it's got the infamous misfire :( I've checked the plugs and leads, leads look like the original ones and they look fine. The plugs also look original which was a bit of a surprise. No1 pot had oil in it and the plug dripped when i took it out, so i checked the oil level which was way too high and I drained a bit out. I've ordered some plugs for it which are arriving tomorrow (I live in the deepest darkest highlands) so hopefully they'll make a difference.

The thing I'm most curious about is that the oil on the dipstick is your average black nasty looking stuff, but the oil which was paying an unwelcome visit to the plug was lovely clean amber stuff. Is that normal? Would it be bcause the oil went straight in after it was overfilled and while it was still clean?

Oh and by the way, try not to get too technical with the answers guys. I am a girl after all ;)

Cheers

Get some new plug leads. Jsut because they look OK doesn't mean they are. They tend to fail every 40,000 miles.

Ok, will do, so do you reckon there's a good chance that the oil was just from the overfill? or am i looking at fitting a new rocker cover gasket?

Ok, will do. So the oil.... am I safe to assume that it was caused by the overfill or am I looking at fitting a new cam cover gasket?

The oil will have been spilt the last time oil was added to the engine. That'll be why it was clean oil and it was in the plug well next to the oil filler :-)

Stupid question, as you seem somewhat savvy and don't be insulted, but you gave the engine a few mins switched off and wiped the dipstick before going back in to check didnt you?

Don't laugh there have been people on here who have over filled the oil and allsorts by not doing such things.

Yep, I'm pretty good when it comes to the oil, although I'm sure there are hundreds of other things I do wrong :) and I'm not at all insulted. It's a fair question.

Should be no more than about £40 a set.

Right Ok then.....

Changed the plugs and leads this morning and then took the car for a

25 mile test drive, it wasn't meant to be that long, but the car was behaving so well that I started to enjoy myself :) It was great. No misfire, smooth as silk... fixed!

Got in the car this afternoon to pop into town and it was back to square one :( the misfire was back with a vengeance.

Didn't notice it before, but there's a hissing noise that's starts at about 2000rpm too, I seem to be hearing it through the center heater vents. I have no idea if that's normal.

Anyway, I suppose the next step is the coil pack? And what the hell is that hissing noise anyway?

It may well be the coil pack as they do fail.

As for the hissing noise... it might be well to check the rubber "T piece" which coincidentally lives underneath the coil pack. They often split and give poor running problems. They cost about a fiver.
