My mondeo 1.8TD (1996) is starting to use a little water and showing evidence of coolant leakage around the base of the expension tank cap. Not sure if this is a sign of headgasket trouble or something else. Any advice out there??

Coolant leakage at the base of the expansion tank cap?
Well the cap is traditionally at the top of the expansion tank (for reasons of gravity - you fill it up at the top), so it won't leak as such from there. What could be happening is that it's boiling over. Maybe the thermostat is at fault, maybe the coolant system needs flushing, maybe the fan's broken? Whatever, get it seen to or it could lead to regular overheating, which could lead to head gasket problems.
Has it been getting hot according to the temp gauge?
