MR2 fuel problem

Trying to help a mate diagnose a problem...

MR2 2l 3S GTE turbo. Problem is that since he changed the head gasket and timing belt, it's running far, far too rich and will not idle. If the engine revs are held at around 1000 with throttle slightly open it will sit there for a few seconds to a minute but then race off to 4k odd rpm accompanied by black smoke and lots of petrol smell.

Valve/cam timing and ignition/distributer timing is exactly as stated in the factory manual and the ECU shows no error codes. Checked the Oxygen sensor, which is giving the correct signals according the the flowcharts.

It was apparently running ok prior to the gasket change, but with a rather large oil leak from the head.

Sounds to me like a vacuum/unmetered air leak, but just can't seem to find it.

Any ideas?

sounds like cam/ign timing. if all correct then check compression

You could try the old unlit propane torch. & check none of the injectors are sticking open.

That's a good idea, and the injectors are next on the list. Just that there is so much to dismantle to get at the fuel rail :(

Compression is good and balanced.

We were so convinced that it might be valve/ign timing that so far 5 people have checked it and it is definitely right. (Know about having to link two pins in the test plug to set ign timing)

Unless all of us, and the book is wrong :)

Try asking in one or all of the Yahoo GT4 groups, as well as those devoted just to the MR2. GT-Four-Owners-UK, gt4, gt4_v2. Same engine. Mike.

Fixed, in case anyone was interested ;)

Turns out that the fuel rail was incorrectly replaced, the plastic spacers had collapsed and the insulators on the end of the injectors were distorted. New set of insulators and plastic spacers and all is well again.
